CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- If an emergency struck, would your child know how to handle it?

The Charleston Police have a program to help teens with all types of emergencies. It could be something as obvious as a hurricane or fire, or a situation that's harder to see like bullying.

Nationally, the Teen Community Emergency Response Teams and Clubs are part of Homeland Security's plan to educate, train and prepare kids to respond to disasters and emergencies.

Right here at home, the Lowcountry Teen CERT Explorer Post 911 and Lowcountry Teen CERT Explorer Club 9112 are the first and only Exploring Post and Club registered CERT programs in the country. The Explorer Post is for ages 14 to 20 years old and the Club is for middle school aged children.

The programs are chartered through an organization called Learning for Life and is sponsored by the Charleston Police Department.

They also get support from the local adult Lowcountry CERT, and Charleston County Emergency Management.

The goal of the programs is to prepare kids to help themselves, their families and their schools in the event of a disaster. Member are taught to respond to disasters, participate in drills and exercises and take additional training.

Participants receive lessons on disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue operations, CERT organization, disaster psychology and terrorism. They even use chemistry to learn about fire safety, physics in search and rescue techniques, psychology to navigate disaster prep and cultural diversity to address terrorism.

"These are wonderful programs that can help our youth become dynamic members of their community," said Senior Police Officer Harry Sosa, Lead Advisor of the Explorer Post and Club.

For more information about the programs contact Senior Police Officer Sosa at (843) 813-3922 or email him at sosah@charleston-sc.gov;. You can also check their Facebook page, Teen CERT Explorer Post 911.
