County property taxes due Jan. 15

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's tax day in the tri-counties. Jan. 15 marks the deadline for real and property taxes, excluding motor vehicles, for Dorchester, Berkeley, and Charleston counties.

Charleston County Treasurer Andrew Smith offered some tips and advice on paying on-time and in the right way.

To pay your property tax you can pay:

  • In person at a County service center
  • Online with a credit card
  • By mail

Smith says it is important to note that if you pay online by credit card, the county only accepts Visa and Mastercard and there is a convenience fee to pay as well.

If you are sending your payment by mail, Smith says as long as your payment is postmarked by Jan. 15 you will not face any penalties. If your payment is late, there are some penalties to face in Charleston County:

  • After January 15 — 3% penalty
  • After February 3 — 10% penalty
  • After March 17 — 15% penalty

Another important note, Charleston County does not set partial payments for property taxes as voted and decided by Charleston County Council.

"Unlike other states, Charleston County has not adopted to take what we call a partial payment," Smith said. "If you are financially strapped, we can not accept a partial payment. We will send the check back to you."

If you have questions on the property tax deadlines, you are encouraged to contact your county's treasury department.
