COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State Rep. Andy Patrick is running for South Carolina superintendent of education.

The Hilton Head Island Republican announced his candidacy Wednesday, saying he wants to help transform the system. The 44-year-old father of five says he can bring parents and educators together. He also says with two special-needs children, he knows firsthand that education needs to be tailored for each child's learning style.

Patrick's announcement comes a month after he introduced a pay-for-performance plan for teachers.

Patrick is a U.S. Air Force veteran and former Secret Service agent.

He says the job of state schools chief has more to do with leadership skills than classroom experience.

Superintendent Mick Zais is not seeking re-election.

State Rep. Mike Anthony of Union and Montrio Belton of Fort Mill are the Democratic candidates.
