Speaker Harrell hospitalized, diagnosed with respiratory illness

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- House Speaker Bobby Harrell was hospitalized this week after battling what he described as "flu-like symptoms" for two weeks.

In a statement released Wednesday, he said he went to see a doctor and was hospitalized overnight so that his condition could be monitored.

Harrell said the medical staff diagnosed him as having respiratory illness.

"I followed my doctor's advice, and was released from the hospital earlier today. After taking today to rest up, I plan to be at the State House tomorrow to gavel the House into session," Harrell said.
