CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police are looking for a man they say ran from the cops and crashed his getaway vehicle, all while a child was in the backseat.

According to a police report, 22-year-old Tor Akil Gregory was approached by patrolling officers on King Street Monday night. He was sitting in a car with the engine running and tried to leave the scene by inching his car forward as police told him to turn the engine off.

A woman standing next to the rear passenger door started yelling "Tor, my kids in the car, my kids in the car, don't run," so officers looked in the backseat and saw a young child.

Police said the woman tried to get the child out of the car while officers continued to yell at Gregory to get out of the car. That's when Gregory reportedly stepped on the gas and "shot forward about five feet" before stopping abruptly.

The child's mother was panicking and was unable to get the child out of the car before Gregory fled the scene and was seen again at King and Romney streets. Officers saw him get on to I-26 so they notified North Charleston police to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

North Charleston police then informed officers that Gregory had wrecked at the off ramp onto Cosgrove Road. The child was taken to MUSC in stable condition but was kept overnight as a precaution.

Somehow Gregory got away and now police are asking for the public's help to locate him.

He is described as a 5'06" black male weighing 145 pounds. He has three warrants with CPD for trespassing, failure to stop for blue lights and endangering a child. He is known to frequent Romney, Athens, and Bayside areas as well as the Palace Apartments.

If anyone has any information on Gregory's whereabouts, they are asked to call Charleston Police at 843-577-7434.
