Sanford to attend I-26 meeting on Jan. 21

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Rep. Mark Sanford will be among those in attendance next week at a public hearing on the proposed changes to Interstate 26.

Earlier this week, Sanford wrote a letter to the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments again expressing his opposition to the state Department of Transportation's plan to clear cut trees along I-26.

"There are many considerations, but a primary one is that how our area looks and feels is a driver in shaping our economic competitiveness. While I know this is a new plan from the Department of Transportation, my concern remains the same as when I wrote back in June," Sanford wrote.

Sanford said he continues to hear opposition to the plan to cut down the trees and replace them with cable guard rails in the medians.

Sanford also pointed out the efforts of former Rep. Arthur Ravenel in convincing the DOT to implement a plan of keeping the trees in place.

"I think it would be contrary to the will of most in our area if we now abandoned that thirty-year tradition and cut these trees in the whole scale form now contemplated," he wrote.

Tuesday night's meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in the Summerville High School Auditorium.

Ahead of that meeting, Sanford will spend more time in the Lowcountry on Friday.

His office announced Thursday that the Congressman would be at the NAPA Auto Parts on North Street in Summerville and the new Mellow Mushroom in Summerville before lunch.

Around 12:15 p.m., he will visit the Verizon Wireless Call Center on Mall Drive in North Charleston.
