Man accused of kidnapping, trying to kill elderly woman sentenced to 80 years

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A jury deliberated for three hours before convicting a man of kidnapping and trying to kill and elderly woman in 2011.

According to Solicitor Scarlett A. Wilson, 29-year-old Latrone Terrell Butler was found guilty of attempted murder, carjacking, and kidnapping. He was sentenced to a total of 80 years in prison.

Wilson said Butler had already been convicted of assault and battery with intent to kill, three previous charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, assault on a police officer, failure to stop for blue lights, and grand larceny.

The victim, a 67-year-old woman, was abducted from her home by Butler on December 5, 2011, and was forced into the passenger side of her own vehicle.

Prosecutors said Butler then drove her to an isolated spot, tried to kill her by repeatedly trying to break her neck, and then fled the scene when an oncoming car interrupted him.

"Butler was identified by the victim in a photographic lineup and located three days later at a local night club with the victim's car in the parking lot and the key to the vehicle in his shoe," said Assistant Solicitor Jennifer Kneece Shealy. "His DNA and fingerprints were inside her vehicle along with the clothing he had worn the night of the abduction."

Butler's arrest came following a tip that he was at Hamm Grants Club at Scott White Road.
