BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County officials say the S.C. Law Enforcement Division is handling an investigation of the county public safety director.

The Beaufort Gazette reported that public safety director Phil Foot was placed on paid administrative leave for one week for what county administrator Gary Kubic called a "violation regarding protocol matters."

Kubic first alerted the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office of the violation Dec. 2. Sheriff P.J. Tanner says his office chose to turn the case over to SLED.

Foot was placed on paid administrative leave for a week. Since his return Dec. 9, but Kubic says he's not supervising the jail during the investigation. His duties typically include overseeing the jail.
