Sanford books busy week in Lowcountry

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Rep. Mark Sanford will make nine stops in four days in the Lowcountry, including a public hearing on Interstate 26 and a town hall focused on the new Bass Pro Shops.

According to Sanford's office, he will spend Tuesday morning at the Boeing Interior Responsibility Center in Ladson. He will spend Tuesday evening at Summerville High School talking with residents and Department of Transportation officials about the plans to clearcut trees along I-26 and replace them with high-tension guard wires.

Sanford has been vocally against the plan, most recently penning a letter to the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments and the state DOT expressing his opposition to the plan.

On Wednesday, Sanford will tour Alcoa Mt. Holly in Goose Creek and then head to downtown Charleston for a town hall with North Charleston business leaders regarding the plans to build a Bass Pro Shops. That meeting will be held at the Charleston County Public Library on Calhoun Street at 3:30 p.m.

It was announced in December 2013 that the major outdoor retailer would be moving into a 150,000-square-foot facility on Northside Drive. It will be part of a 2-million-square-foot facility called Ingleside Plantation.

Sanford on Wednesday evening will make a stop at the Awendaw Barn Jam.

On Thursday, Sanford will travel to Beaufort to talk with students at the local high school. In the evening, he will speak at the Republicans of Sun City meeting on Hilton Head Island.

On Friday, Sanford will return to the Charleston area, making a stop in the morning at Daniel Island Academy and the Bulldog Hiway Express in North Charleston.
