Girl Scouts to retire flag at North Charleston HQ

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- More than 30 Girl Scouts will gather at the group's North Charleston headquarters Sunday afternoon to raise new United States, South Carolina and Girl Scout flags.

The old flags will be retired as part of the ceremony that's salted to start at 3 p.m. at the Dorchester Road facility.

The scouts will also honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for the upcoming holiday.

The event is free, but organizers are asking people to bring a non-perishable food donation that will be given to the Lowcountry Food Bank.

"The girls have found in putting this flag ceremony together that many people have not attended or seen a flag ceremony," a release from the group reads. "They are excited to present such an important, patriotic event to the public -- some of whom will be experiencing the ceremony for the first time."

The keynote speaker will be Lt. Col. Deborah Rieflin, an Air Force pilot stationed in Charleston and a mother of a daughter heavily involved in Scouting.
