3rd Republican enters SC superintendent race

Posted: Updated:

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - An Anderson County school board member is seeking the Republican nomination for South Carolina schools superintendent.

Gary Burgess announced his candidacy Monday. He says he will remove roadblocks that keep teachers from being effective. He says arts and civic responsibility are important parts of a child's education.

Burgess is the third Republican to enter the race after GOP incumbent Mick Zais announced last month he wouldn't seek re-election. Education activist Sheri Few and state Rep. Andy Patrick of Hilton Head Island have also announced they will be in the June Republican primary.

Democrats vying for the job are state Rep. Mike Anthony of Union, a retired teacher and coach, and former principal Montrio Belton of Fort Mill, who worked as Zais' director of school transformation.
