Police: Man shot own foot, charged with gun possession

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston police say a man with a gunshot wound to his foot shot himself Monday night.

North Charleston police spent part of Monday evening trying to figure out how a man was shot in North Charleston Monday evening. According to police, the victim said he was shot by an unknown man. He was hit between the toes, police said. 

However, police say witnesses have told them that they saw the victim playing with a gun when it fired. The man later admitted to officers that he shot himself. 

He was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

Police say the incident happened neat Comstock Avenue and Davis Street.
