Owners face fines for not moving boats in Beaufort

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Call it a pricey parking ticket for South Carolina boaters.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (ttp://bit.ly/1ijEGQV) that owners of boats moored by a bluff along the Beaufort River could be fined $1,000 a day if they don't move their boats by Feb. 10. The city plans to operate a mooring area where the boats are now anchored near the city's Downtown Marina.

Notices were placed earlier this month on more than a dozen boats. Boat owner Amberlee Pelkey says some of the boats have been moored there for decades and the city should allow the boats to remain.

The city has state and federal permits to establish a mooring field of up to 46 buoys. Work on the project is expected to begin in about two months.
