Charges dropped against man in Orangeburg kidnapping

Posted: Updated:

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston man who was arrested in connection to an armed robbery and kidnapping in Orangeburg is no longer facing those charges.

His attorney said his client was being arrested for another crime at the time of the kidnapping.

Officials at the solicitor's office said Rondell Robert Washington has an alibi in the case. First Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe described Washington's alibi as "airtight."

According to Washington's attorney Mike Dupree, Washington was charged on the day of the kidnapping with criminal domestic violence at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dupree said that arrested happened around 3:45 p.m. the day of the kidnapping, making it impossible for Washington to have been involved in the kidnapping and armed robbery in Holly Hill.

He thought Washington was identified as a suspect because of a photo lineup shown to victims, but he was not sure how Washington was included in the photo lineup.

Washington had been arrested in the case of the kidnapped 4-month-old, the Orangeburg County sheriff said Wednesday. According to Sheriff Leroy Ravenell, Washington was identified as a suspect in the burglary and kidnapping case earlier this month in which a group of seven men rushed into a home, forced several people to the ground and took the small child.

The baby was found a short time later in Berkeley County. The baby was unharmed.

Washington was charged with burglary, kidnapping, unlawful neglect of a child, and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

"We will not stop looking for the misfits who entered this home, physically and mentally abusing a family, and removing a helpless child from her caregivers. Our investigation won't stop until all the persons have answered to their charges," Ravenell said.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 803-534-3550 or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
