SCE&G warns customers about email scam

Posted: Updated:

CAYCE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with South Carolina Electric and Gas said a recent email scam is targeting some of the company's utility customers.

According to a release, customers reported receiving emails from Atmos Energy based in Dallas, and Pacific Gas and Electric based in San Francisco, saying they have overdue account balances.

The scam is not only in South Carolina but nationwide, the release states.

Officials said SCE&G may email a customer regarding an overdue balance but the account notices should not come from other utility companies.

Officials said you should never give out personal information such as account numbers, account balances, Social Security numbers or passwords.

SCE&G customers can call the company's toll-free customer service line at 800-251-7234 for questions about their accounts.

If you think you are the victim of a scam, you can call your local law enforcement agency or report it to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs at 800-922-1594.
