SC BCBS Foundation rewards more than $4.89 million in grants

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation awarded more than $4.89 million in its latest grant cycle to health care-related organizations serving uninsured and underinsured people in South Carolina.

"The grants from our latest cycle bring the 2013 total amount of funds awarded to more than $7 million," said Harvey Galloway, the foundation's executive director. "Since the foundation began awarding grants in 2003, we've allocated more than $48 million to address health care issues affecting the most vulnerable in the state."

The foundation has two grant cycles each year.

The following organizations received grants in the most recent cycle:

  • SC Thrive, to South Carolina's military veterans' access to a wide variety of public benefits, increasing the likelihood that they will complete their education.
  • East Cooper Community Outreach, to expand preventive and restorative adult dental service in Berkeley and Charleston counties.
  • Clemson University, to support the development of descriptive data on S.C. residents who have been uninsured for at least a year and who remain uninsured in 2014.
  • S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, to support a statewide initiative to collect, report and disseminate fitness-related data on S.C. school-aged children.
  • Welvista, to assist the mail order pharmacy operations in providing donated prescription medications to uninsured S.C. residents.
  • LiveWell Greenville/YMCA of Greenville, to work with Greenville neighborhoods to conduct assessments and activities to support positive health behaviors and outcomes.
  • S.C. Coastal Conservation League, to create a stronger local food system by connecting rural farm businesses to Midlands, Lowcountry and Pee Dee distribution outlets.
  • Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg, to provide supplies and equipment in a free dental clinic serving uninsured Spartanburg County children.
  • Area Churches Together Serving (ACTS), to fund low-cost pharmacy options and emergency dental care for underinsured and uninsured Aiken County residents.
  • Communities in Schools of the Charleston Area, to continue and expand teen health and pregnancy prevention education for Johns Island and North Charleston middle school students.
