Former Bishop England baseball star heads back to home field

Posted: Updated:

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Reese Havens was a star shortstop out of Bishop England who never missed a game in his three years at the University of South Carolina. He was also a first-round pick by the New York Mets.

But injuries ended later ended that dream.

After five years in the minor leagues, without ever making it to the majors, Havens retired Wednesday at the age of 27.

"I did what I could to compete at a high level. And I really don't have any regrets," he said.

In just five years, the former Gamecock went from a first-round draft pick with a seven-figure signing bonus to a man left pondering his future after ending his career on the diamond.

"When I was at Carolina, I didn't miss a game," he said. "And it was kind of weird how it happened in pro ball. I just had a lot of off-the-wall injuries and I dealt with them as they came and tried to get back on the field as quick as possible."

Now, after five years as a professional baseball player, Havens is bringing his career back to the very field where he first started gaining national attention.

He'll head back home to Bishop England and help coach the next crop of Charleston's talent.

"I'm going to help these guys out and get my degree and start applying for jobs," he said.

Walking the field at the high school, Havens is drawn back to the memories he made and the relationships he formed.

He said the memories, the people and the community's support meant much more than just playing baseball ever could.

"Those people had a huge impact on my life and I couldn't have done it by myself- from a very young age, all the way to the end," he said. "And I'm very grateful for those people and what they did for me."
