Man posing as electric company rep robs North Charleston biz

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man posing as a power company employee robbed a store on Rivers Avenue Saturday afternoon.

According to North Charleston police, a black man in his thirties entered the Owner's Box wearing a hard hat, a reflective vest, safety glasses and carrying a metal clipboard. The man told employees that he was with the power company and needed to inspect their electrical box due to a transformer problem in the area.

According to the NCPD report, the manager had gotten a call from his boss saying SCE&G was sending someone by to check the breaker box.

After messing with the fuse box, the man then pulled out a handgun and demanded money, police said. The man reportedly fired one shot into a wall of the business, then said "I'm going to kill you if you don't give me the money" before taking money from the cash register and a back office.

Police say the man also used zip ties to bound the two people in the store.

A short time after the suspect left the store, the victims were able to free themselves and then run to a nearby business to call police.

The suspect is described as a dark-skinned black male, between 6'2" and 6'4" and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds with a slender but muscular build. Witnesses said he was wearing jeans and tan work boots. He also had a light colored short sleeve shirt under the safety vest with a long-sleeved white or cream colored long john type shirt under that.

If anyone knows anything about this or any other crime they are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
