CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston County officials will soon be breaking ground on an upgrade to the walking and biking path along the Ben Sawyer Causeway.

According to a release sent Monday, the work will begin on January 31 and will widen the path by four feet.

The widening project runs about a mile and a half starting on the Mount Pleasant side at Simmons Point Road, crossing the Ben Sawyer Bridge, and will end at the existing concrete sidewalk on Sullivan's Island.

Crews will install a new asphalt multiuse path and will implement most of their lane closures from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Work is estimated to be finished in May.

A ceremony will be held on Jan. 31 on Gold Bug Island. Speakers include County Chairman Teddie Pryor, Mt. Pleasant Mayor Linda Page, and Sullivan's Island Mayor Mike Pekis.
