Building Arts campus before Charleston council

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The American College of the Building Arts is going before Charleston City Council with plans for a new campus.

The college is the nation's only liberal arts college, training students in traditional building trades such as plastering, timber framing and masonry. It has been operating out of Charleston's decrepit, 200-year-old city jail for more than a decade.

On Thursday, college President Colby Broadwater III will present a proposal to have the city sell an 1897 trolley barn to the college for use as a new campus.

The building will, for the first time, allow the college to have modern classrooms, offices and the library as well as workshops in one location. College officials hope renovations to the building could be completed in two years.
