BERKELEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- State Superintendent Dr. Mick Zais announced his nominations for the 2014 Blue Ribbon Award and two Berkeley County schools made the cut.

The Blue Ribbon Award honors public and private schools the make high level achievements or significant improvements throughout the year.

"I am excited to nominate five of our highest performing schools for this prestigious award," said Dr. Zais.  "Students, teachers, and parents of these extraordinary public schools should be proud of this achievement and what it means for their communities.  Let's congratulate them and also recognize the efforts of the local school boards and school district leadership for this national accomplishment."

Per federal guidelines, South Carolina can only nominate five schools.

Dr. Zais' nominees are:

• Hanahan Elementary in Berkeley County School District

All five schools have more than 50 percent of their students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds and all five got "A" ratings on their federal report card.
