USCG: Carnival Fantasy passenger airlifted to hospital

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) --  A Carnival Fantasy cruise passenger had a medical emergency and was taken off the ship.

According to U.S.Coast Guard officials, they are "medically evacuating" an injured cruise ship passenger off the ship more than 80 miles off Cape Canaveral.

According to an online cruise trackers, the Fantasy is on its way back to Charleston from a five day cruise to the Bahamas.

According to a press release from the USCG, one of their helicopter crews evacuated a 27-year-old man who said he was having severe abdominal pains.

After a USCG surgeon and the ship's doctor discussed the man's symptoms they decided to immediately medevac him.

An aircrew from Air Station Miami airlifted the man and a nurse off the cruise ship. Officials said they were taken to Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

The man's current condition is unknown.

Carnival Cruise Lines released the following statement.

"Carnival Cruise Lines can confirm that a male guest in immediate need of medical attention was airlifted from the Carnival Fantasy via U.S. Coast Guard helicopter earlier today.  The guest was taken to a shoreside medical facility for further treatment.  Carnival Fantasy was on the last leg of a five-day cruise that departed Charleston, S.C. on Saturday, Feb. 1 and is scheduled to return to Charleston tomorrow morning."
