CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – A wintry mix was common across the Lowcountry last Tuesday and Wednesday, with freezing rain and sleet creating anywhere from a tenth to an inch of ice.

And the frozen precipitation had crews at SCE&G working around the clock to try keep the lights on.

"We had probably around 400 folks that were working on the operation area that were working down in the Lowcountry from Beaufort to Charleston," said Eric Boomhower, an SCE&G spokesman.

At one point during the storm, there were roughly 8,000 SCE&G customers without power.

"Relatively very low numbers considering the nature of the weather event that we experienced with all that frozen precipitation," said Boomhower. "The fact that the numbers were so low I think is really a reflection of the effectiveness of our tree trimming efforts throughout the year throughout our service territory."

Other agencies stayed busy, too.

Charleston County Public Works employees logged 2,800 hours while those manning the Emergency Operations Center worked 900 hours.

Charleston County EMS Director Don Lundy says the storm cost his department about $12,000.

And in the coming weeks, these agencies along with SC Department of Transportation will continue to calculate total costs from this rare ice storm.
