Health care hub proposed in Summerville

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A North Charleston health care practice plans to build a medical hub in Summerville that could employ 1,500 workers.

Palmetto Primary Care Physicians and Equity Healthcare plan to spend $135 million on the project.

Plans for the Palmetto Health and Wellness Campus will be released Monday.

Palmetto Primary Care has said the hub will reduce medical costs. They would not release details before Monday's announcement.

A statement on the project says it will bring together the latest developments in "diagnostics, telemedicine and minimally invasive ambulatory care."

About 1,100 of the jobs would be new.

The first stage includes two medical office buildings, an ambulatory surgery center, a 24-hour urgent care unit, rehabilitation services and other facilities.

Officials say they could add cancer treatment, hospice services and assisted-living homes later.
