CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) --  The Welborns were sitting in their living room watching TV when they saw a story about a dog getting a bulletproof vest. That's when Paul Welborn turned to his wife and said, "We can do that."

So they did just that.

Thanks to their generosity, one of Charleston's K-9 officers will go out into the field protected just like his human counterparts.

"This is the first time a citizen has donated a bullet proof vest for one of our K-9s," said Lt. Michael Thomas, supervisor of the K-9 Unit. "I think it's wonderful that he will be protected just like any other officer."

The $1,000 vest went to K-9 Officer Orrie, a two-and-a-half-year-old German shepherd who has been with the Charleston Police Department since June 2013.

"I was so excited when we got the vest," said Mrs. Welborn, a volunteer with Charleston Animal Society. "We have several friends who can do the same thing. We will work on them."

Police Chief Greg Mullen said the donation is a testament to the great relationship the department has with its citizens.
