SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by a homeowner Sunday morning, Charleston County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Officials said deputies responded to a home on Dunmeyer Hill Road at about 6:10 a.m.

The 76-year-old homeowner told deputies he was leaving his home and walking toward his car in his carport when 25-year-old Robert Deziel, of Summerville, approached him and tried to stun him with what he believed was a stun gun.

Officials said the homeowner struggled with Deziel and then shot the suspect three times with a handgun the homeowner was carrying.

Deziel was declared dead at the scene, officials said.

The Charleston County Coroner said the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A sheriff's office spokesman said that while it's not mentioned in the incident report, deputies did recover a stun gun from the scene.

The homeowner was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. According to the police report the homeowner had "several abrasions on his hands" and it looked like he had been hit in the face because there was swelling and bruising under his right eye.

Officials said they are still investigating the circumstances around the incident and no arrests have been made.

"It appeared to be a brutal attack. It appeared to be planned. And he had a perfect right to kill the assailant," said former S.C. Attorney General Charlie Condon, who authored the state's Castle Doctrine, which protects people's right to defend themselves and their property.

Deziel's neighbor and family friend Scott Edwards said he was surprised and shocked.

"Sometimes you can get in the wrong crowd. It's really sad. He was well liked. It's just a shame that it happened to somebody so young," Edwards said.

According to a background check from the State Law Enforcement Division, Deziel did not have a criminal record in the state of South Carolina.
