RAVENEL, S. C. (WCIV) -- A teenager charged with attempted murder after deputies said he shot another teenager in the stomach appeared in bond court Sunday morning.

According to court documents, Shaquill Coles, 17, confronted a man outside a home in Ravenel, which led to a physical altercation.

Police said Coles pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Coles shot a relative, officials said. But family members of both Coles and the victim said the victim was not the intended target.

Family members said the victim got caught in the cross fire.

"He was coming from a game on Friday night and some young men followed him home," said Jeanette Brooks, the suspect's aunt. "They got into an altercation and during the altercation his best friend was shot. But it was an accident.

Not only that, Brooks said Coles and the victim are second cousins.

"They are like brothers. I mean you couldn't separate the two," she said.

Coles was charged with attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18.

A judge set his bail at $50,000.

Officials said Coles and the victim are students at Baptist Hill High School.

In a statement from the Charleston County School District officials said, "A Baptist Hill High School student was arrested this weekend. He has been suspended effective immediately and is being recommended to the Office of Student Placement for expulsion."

The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for a gunshot wound to the torso.

He was released from the hospital the same day.
