CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Shrimping in waters off of South Carolina will end Thursday, according to a release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

According to the release, the federal waters off the coast of the Palmetto State will be closed to harvesting brown, pink and white fish through May 31.

The state has also closed its territorial waters to all shrimping.

State fishery managers requested the closure due to a prolonged period of water temperatures at or below 9°C in the region.

During the federal closure, any vessel trawling in a part of a closed area that is within 25 nautical miles of South Carolina state waters must use trawl nets with a minimum mesh size of four inches or greater.

The closure may end earlier than May based on a request by South Carolina.

According to the release, the federal closure will not remain effective after May 31.
