Police question parent volunteer after second grader finds gun

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – Summerville police released new details surrounding the finding of a gun at Newington Elementary School.

According to a police report, officers were called to the school on Thursday in reference to a parent having a gun inside the building.

Officials said a second-grade student found a black and pink handgun in her crayon bag and immediately told the teacher.

While questioning the teacher involved, police said the teacher told them the student's mother stopped by her classroom that afternoon and asked to see her daughter's book bag.

According to the police report, the teacher told police the parent returned the book bag and left the room.

Moments later, police said the woman's daughter told the same teacher her mom had left something in her bag. When the teacher asked what it was, the report states the student said, "Her gun."

Officials said police interviewed the student's mother and the mother reportedly told police she dropped a book off in her daughter's classroom, not a weapon.

The day before, the mother told police she had the weapon in her purse and mistakenly carried it into the school.

According to the police report, she told police once she realized she had the handgun, she took it outside and left it in her car.

A release sent Thursday evening from school district officials said the students and staff were never in danger.

Officials would not say if the gun was loaded.

The incident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed.
