MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Common Core Standards were adopted by South Carolina four years ago.

So far, 45 states have adopted the educational standards.

The standards outline what knowledge and skills each child should have at every grade level. One example is algebra being introduced for eighth graders.

The Charleston County School District held three informational meetings Monday night to bring parents up to speed on the standards.

Lainge Middle School Principal Jay Whitehair is one of several district leaders trying to teach parents what their kids are now learning since Common Core Standards are in effect.

School officials said they are trying to inform and enlighten everyone about the standards using video presentations and guidelines.

Adrienne Lauder is a learning specialist for the Elementary Learning Community. She said the new state standards will help all students.

"Common Core emphasizes rigor and really going in depth to a conceptual understanding of the standards," she said. "And to me, Common Core is teaching at its finest. It is good teaching."

Parents, teachers and education advocates gathered for the informational meeting.

Roger O'Sullivan is the chairman of a group that opposes Common Core.

He said it is an idea from Washington that will not work in South Carolina.

"It's also a direct violation of three federal statutes," he said. "And it takes control of local education away from the localities."

Rita Roache Buncum has kids that attend Lainge Middle School. She said she does not have enough information yet to form an opinion about the standards.

"It was institutionalized without giving parents a lot of information," she said. "So I'm trying to educate myself to make a determination if it's in my children's best interests."
