Snowfall picks up in Gadsden

Posted: Updated:
GADSDEN - AL -

Some of the most intense winter weather has been hitting for hours in northeast Alabama. In Gadsden, the snowfall picked up steam Wednesday night.

Rhonda Huggins and Diane Samples, work at Riverview Hospital and were making their way back to their hotel room for the night.

They described the conditions they encountered.

"It's scary, we slid a little coming from the hospital. The roads are a little bit slippery but we made it," said Huggins.

The city of Gadsden looked more like a ghost town this night. As businesses and restaurants closed up shop for fear of the weather.

Crews continued treating the roads with temps around the freezing mark and thicker snowflakes continuing to fall.

Denise Cooey, deputy director for the Etowah County EMA office, says drivers have heeded the warnings.

"Thankfully people are staying off the roads. There's not a lot of traffic on the road and that's a real good thing."
