Treacherous driving conditions across NE Alabama

Posted: Updated:

Due to extremely hazardous driving conditions in northern Alabama, Department of Transportation officials are again urging motorists to avoid travel.  ALDOT recommends staying off all roadways until at least noon on Thursday, February, 13.

Heavy snowfall, precipitation and freezing temperatures across parts of the state have rendered many roads impassable.

CULLMAN, MARSHALL, DEKALB, JACKSON & MADISON
Non interstate routes – All roads are snow covered and impassable.  Travel should not be attempted. Road crews are present.

BLOUNT, ST. CLAIR, ETOWAH, CHEROKEE
Non interstate routes – All roads have snow remaining.  Travel is not advised.

Accumulating snowfall during the 8 o'clock hour Wednesday night significantly impairing travel in the metro Birmingham area as well. Freezing temperatures overnight are complicating response efforts and increasing the potential for dangerous travel. Despite roadway treatment activities, ALDOT officials are urging people to stay off roadways until conditions improve later in the day on Thursday.

"The safest thing for people to do is stay at home, avoiding travel overnight and Thursday morning," said ALDOT spokesman Tony Harris. "Heavy snowfall, particularly in central and north Alabama is impairing the roadways to the point that many are impassable. We are encouraging people to please remain off roadways and keep them open for essential emergency personnel."
