Coroner IDs woman killed in Awendaw Creek wreck

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person died after a vehicle became submerged in Awendaw Creek, said officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Department.

THe coroner's office on Sunday night identified the victim as 72-year-old Sandra Ann Weiss, of New Bern, N.C.

The northbound bridge was closed Saturday night until the Highway Department could inspect it because it was hit by the vehicle before it went into the creek. An inspector cleared the bridge and traffic was allowed to pass in both directions shortly before midnight Saturday.

"I live down the road a mile and a half and haven't been able to go home yet," said Lydia Wilson, who has lived in the neighborhood for ten years.

US Coast Guard officials said a helicopter crew from Air Facility Charleston assisted local authorities.

Coast Guard officials said Charleston County dispatch operators notified Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center at 4:54 p.m.

"It's terrorizing to everybody, you know - shocking," said Wilson. "You can't believe that someone came through our neighborhood and did something like this. You got to pay attention when you are driving."
