More people eligible for SC autism services

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - More than 900 people are eligible for autism-related services because of a change in the official definition of the disorder, but South Carolina has a waiting list for some kinds of help.

The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/MXIPMX) more than 6,500 people have applied for autism-related services from the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. A department spokesman says that of those, about 920 are eligible because of the new definition for autism rom the American Psychiatric Association.

But not all are receiving services because the department has huge waiting lists for most of its programs. For example, the pervasive developmental disorder program has 902 children in the program with 1,241 on its waiting list.

Autism symptoms vary. In general, people with autism struggle with communication and social and repetitive behaviors.
