Tulsa Drillers Hunting A Texas League Title

Posted: Updated:

We are just 44 days away from opening day at ONEOK Field.  You can almost smell the fresh popcorn and brats already.  Future Drillers are beginning to assemble in Scottsdale Arizona for Colorado Rockies spring training camp.

This will be Kevin Riggs second season as the manager of the Drillers.  He says he expects to have some major talent playing here in Tulsa.

"With all the depth we've added to our organization at the big league level I think we'll have a little bit of a trickle down effect." Riggs said, "Which should solidify our club. I know we should be pretty prominent on the pitchers mound."

One of the guys expected to be on the mound for the Drillers this season is former Sooner ace Jonathan Gray.  Last summer he pitched in nine games and had a perfect record of 4-0 with an ERA of 1.97 in 37-innings pitched.

"I am looking forward to him possibly being with us. I would think he doesn't have a whole lot to prove where he's been." Riggs said, "Watching him throw his bull pin. The velocity, the angle of his fast ball and the command of all the pitches are pretty impressive. In talking with our catch from last year Dustin Garneau. I've asked him personally what have got on it and he said (with an impressed sign) it's pretty good."

Tulsa has won the Texas League eight times since 1936, but their last was 16 years ago.  Riggs says it's about time they win it again.

"For me this is two years now that we've had some unfinished business. We really want to lock down for the front office, for the community and would really like to get into the playoffs and make a strong run. I'm not going to be shy about saying that this year. We're coming in her to win a Texas League Championship and that's just the way it's going to be."

The quest gets started April 3rd at ONEOK Field against Corpus Christi.
