CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV)-- North Charleston sports one of the top baseball programs in the Lowcountry. The Dixie Baseball Program is all about using the diamond to turn boys into men.

For Nick Orvin, a couple rounds in the batting cage at Collins Park reminds him of the day he found his passion.

"I have to point to the World Series that we played in 2009," said Orvin.

Orvin was 18 when he played centerfield for the North Charleston Dixie Majors. It was at Collins Park where Orvin and his team won the World Series, but for Orvin, the excitement didn't stop there.

"I was recruited on this field by The Citadel during that summer, and it really changed my life. It all started right here in this program," said Orvin.

The North Charleston Dixie Baseball program started back in 1990. The program has since touched thousands of lives, turning boys into men.

Orvin played four years at The Citadel, but his personal home run came when he was accepted into pharmacy school. He credits his success to his tenure in the program.

"Their thing is know your role and do your job. That has been the emphasis here since they've started. It's all about hard work and getting better as an individual," he said.

Orvin is now giving back, coaching when he can, helping players to succeed — not only on the field, but off the field as well.

"You see guys that have come through that end up going to the military. They come from bad backgrounds, and this just gives them a chance to meet people and meet the right people and just kind of learn some life lessons and move forward in life," said Orvin.

On Thursday, ABC News 4 will be live from Park Circle as part of the Your Neighbors series.

There will be a meet-and-greet event at 4 p.m. at DIG in the Park and we will provide food and give-aways. Then at 6 and 7 p.m., the North Charleston High School Jazz Band will join Dean Stephens and Victoria Hansen in live broadcasts from Park Circle.
