Park Circle stays the course with disc golf

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The City of North Charleston's motto is "A great place to live, work, and play." The Park Circle community has embraced the 'play' aspect with the Felix Davis Community Center's playground, sports fields, and a hidden gem of a little-known course.

A disc golf course, to be exact.

"Disc golf is basically like ball golf where you strike the ball with a club but instead you use a disc," said avid Park Circle disc golf player Tracey Stephens. "It's a leisurely sport where it is nice to get outside and enjoy the outdoors."

At Park Circle, the disc golf course circles around the prominent roundabout circle with nine holes. There are two tees for each hole which equals out to 18 holes, just like in a traditional golf course.

And just like having a set of clubs for golf, disc golf requires a different set of discs in order to go the distance.

"This is a tournament size bag. It's large enough to carry a bunch of discs -- about 22 discs in here," Stephens said showing off his disc golf bag.

It's a unique sport with a hidden gem course that Stephens said has been welcomed and improved by the Park Circle community.

"The local people around here did great job. We get a lot of help from the city park people in setting up the course, maintaining it, and keeping it clean," he said.

On Thursday, ABC News 4 will be live from Park Circle as part of the Your Neighbors series.

There will be a meet-and-greet event at 4 p.m. at DIG in the Park and we will provide food and give-aways. Then at 6 and 7 p.m., the North Charleston High School Jazz Band will join Dean Stephens and Victoria Hansen in live broadcasts from Park Circle.
