State Senate delays $100 million bond issue

The Alabama Senate has delayed action on a bill that would authorize the state to sell $100 million in bonds to help move Alabama students to digital textbooks.  The bill's sponsor, Republican Senator Gerald Dial of Lineville, says switching from paper to digital textbooks would save money over the long run.  But Dial ran into opposition from some fellow Republicans.

Senator Paul Bussman of Cullman questioned whether the state should be selling any more bonds because more than $1.1 billion in bonds have been authorized since 2011.  After more than an hour of debate Thursday, Dial got the Senate to set his bill aside and give him time to round up support.
