NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Lowcountry fans had the chance to cheer on one of their own at the North Charleston Coliseum Thursday night. Darius Rucker played to a sold-out crowd.

"I'm just really excited because I've never been to one of his concerts and I love his songs," said Theresa McGee said.

"I've always wanted to see Darius Rucker in his hometown," said Wanda Weart..

Gary Weart gave show tickets to his wife Wanda for Valentine's Day.

"She's gotten her truffles and her flowers and her cards, a little stuffed bear. This was the grand finale," said Gary Weart.

Rucker is one of about 15 acts playing at the North Charleston Coliseum this year. The Performing Arts Center is also keeping busy with 15 acts each month.

"This last year, 2013, we were No. 78 in the world in terms of tickets sold of all the venues of that theater size," said North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center General Manager Dave Holscher.

He said the arts campus will keep up with the Lowcountry's growth. But no matter the changes, Rucker will always be the hometown hero.

"It's good he's from the area and gives back to the area. I appreciate he does so much for the area," said Tasha McGee.

"He does a lot for the schools. So it's great to have him here and celebrate with the locals," said Paul Wilson.

If you include Rucker's solo performances and those with Hootie and the Blowfish, Thursday was his fifth time performing here at the Coliseum.

Widespread Panic holds the record for the most performances at the coliseum with 16.
