Controlled burns at state parks

Posted: Updated:

Areas of Oak Mountain State Park will be set on fire in the coming weeks.  But don't be alarmed, this is one of two state parks that will be cleaned using controlled burns.
The Alabama State Parks Division says it's conducting controlled burns at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham and Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin.
The controlled burns are scheduled to begin between Wednesday and March 13. The fires will cover four to 36 acres.
The clean up efforts at Wind Creek are an effort to eliminate pine straw from the campgrounds. The controlled burns at Oak Mountain will focus on clearing away sweet gum and pine straw from the golf course.
Officials say the fires also help with the growth of grasses and wildflowers in the parks.
