BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Beginning in the Fall, Samford University's Howard College of Arts & Sciences will offer a sports media program to its journalism and mass communication students, allowing them an opportunity for on-the-job training within the athletic department, the school announced Wednesday.

According to a release, around 20 students will be selected each year to work and study sports jobs specific to journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcasting and event planning. Samford's Journalism and Mass Communication Department and athletic department plan to establish a sports-media minor program within one year through the university's Curriculum Committee, as well as sports broadcasting and photojournalism programs in the Fall 2014 semester.

"We think this will be an important first step toward creating a sports media emphasis within the department," said Bernie Ankney, chair of Samford's JMC Department. "Sports media will complement the department's exceptional print journalism, broadcast journalism, public relations and advertising tracks. We want to show our support for Samford athletics and prepare our students for the rapidly expanding employment opportunities in the sports-media field.  The hands-on experience students will get in the Athletics Department will be invaluable."

Currently, JMC students and faculty are filming a reality television series -- "The Student Athlete" -- that follows the day-to-day life of nine athletes from various sports. The pilot episode is expected to be finished in May, according to the school.
