CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- For decades, Wando Shrimp Company has been one of the Lowcountry's favorite spots to buy shrimp.

Saturday the business closed for good and now local shrimpers feel they may go out of business next.

"We kind of took a hit with Wando Seafood closing down," said Rocky Magwood a local shrimper and owner of Magwood Jr. & Sons. "We are just not sure how much longer we will be able to keep our place."

Tommy Edwards is also a local shrimper who also used to sell shrimp through the Wando Shrimp Company.

"We have nowhere to pack our shrimp out now," said Edwards. "I'm going to have to put them in the truck and drive them to Georgia or somewhere in South Carolina. Before, we could just go right over to Wando's and give them our shrimp and go home."

Edwards and Magwood said it's governmental regulations and the lack of shrimp that have made it hard for local shrimpers to survive.

Over the years, Magwood said the number of shrimp has dwindled and Shem Creek shrimpers have as well.

"There used to be a time where there were 60 to 80 boats out there at one point. Now you look down the creek and you might see ten boats," he said.

And that number could soon get even smaller.

"Honestly, I say I'll probably be out of business in November," said Edwards. "You probably won't see me here next year."

Magwood says he keeps hope alive, all while maintaining the business his family started in 1972.

"We are going to try and hold and stand as long as we can," said Magwood.

Shem Creek Fisheries is selling t-shirts to raise money to support local Shrimpers.
