CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston Animal Society honored the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission with an ambassador award for helping the organization become the first No Kill Community in the southeastern United States.

The inaugural Community Ambassador Award was presented at the Charleston Animal Society's annual meeting for its dedication to pets and their owners.

"The CCPRC has been there every step of the way promoting healthy lifestyles between pet owners and their pets," said CAS Chief Executive Officer Joe Elmore. "And, more importantly, [for] providing numerous opportunities to engage those lifestyles, acting as a leader for other organizations and businesses in our community."

CCPRC will continue to host pet-friendly events, including Pet Fest, the weekend of March 22-23. The festival will be at Palmetto Island County Park in Mount Pleasant from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Other pet-friendly events hosted by CCPRC include Smart Puppy Class, Pups, Yups and Food Trucks and Dog Day Afternoon.

Leashed pets are also allowed in many of the county's parks and dogs can enjoy a place just for them at the off-leash dog parks located at James Island County Park, Palmetto Islands County Park, and Wannamaker County Park.
