SC engineering students try concrete canoes

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) -- Civil engineering students from around the Southeast are heading to Charleston with hopes of making their concrete canoes float.

The American Society of Civil Engineers' contest is scheduled for this weekend with canoe races slated for Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ASCE holds an annual regional conference that rotates from college to college.

The canoes are built by student teams from colleges and universities and are judged on how much recycled material is used, the water resistance of the craft and the racing ability.

Colleges participating include:

  • The Citadel
  • Clemson University
  • Duke University
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Horry Georgetown Technical College
  • North Carolina A&T University
  • North Carolina State University
  • University of North Carolina, Charlotte
  • University of South Carolina
  • Trident Technical College

A tug-of-war also is set for the contest, which is being held at James Island County Park. The Citadel's student chapter of the ASCE is hosting the event which is free and open to the public.

A steel bridge building competition will also take place on Sat., March 8, at The Citadel's McAllister Field House beginning at 8 a.m.
