NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The man accused of killing a man in a shootout at a motorcycle shop in North Charleston has been given immunity and his murder charge has been dropped.

According to attorney Andy Savage, the charges against Ronald Reid were dismissed by Judge Roger Young Friday because he was granted immunity under the SC Protection of Persons and Property Act.

Police said Ronald Reid was involved in a fatal gang fight at the Cycle Gear motorcycle shop in North Charleston last year. They said he shot a rival gang member, Maurice Horry, after a fight inside the shop spilled out into the parking lot.

Investigators said there were several gang members involved, but only the suspect and the victim had guns.

The order identifies Horry as a member of the Street Kings of Columbia and says members of his gang "drove by and allegedly revved their engines" at members of the Wheels of Soul gang with which Reid was affiliated.

The members of the Columbia gang were shopping at Cycle Gear when members of Wheels of Soul showed up and started a fight. It was after the fight started that Reid reportedly showed up and was forced outside by fleeing patrons.

Reid said he was trying to leave when Horry came out of the store firing and that's when he was shot in the leg.

Attorney Andy Savage admitted his client did open fire, but said the victim fired first. He claimed his client acted in self defense.

According to the judge's order granting immunity, Reid's attorneys proved he was not present when the fight started, was only at the cycle shop to buy a new helmet and only shot back at Horry after he himself had been shot in the leg.

"Under the Stand Your Ground Act, he had no duty to retreat and was justified in returning force with force," the order states. "As such, he is entitled to immunity from prosecution for the shooting of Maurice Horry."
