CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- Nearly $20,000 worth of tools were swiped from a work site in downtown Charleston and the owner said this is not the first time.

Jeff St. Pierre is the co-owner of St. Pierre Construction Company.

Last Friday, he said his crew packed up their tools and locked them away in the company's trailer on the construction site, only to return to work Monday and find the tools gone.

"They hauled off the entire trailer with $20,000 worth of tools," said Pierre, a Lowcountry native.

Police said the incident happened in downtown Charleston on St. Phillips Street.

Pierre said his business averages six to eight projects at any given time throughout the year, and now, he only has five trailers to keep up with construction projects.

"It will probably take the rest of this year to build back up to what we have if we have to replace that trailer and all of the tools that were in it," said Pierre.

Sonny Mcgee has built custom trailers for 18 years. He said tracking down a stolen trailer is hard, especially in South Carolina.

"We are one of the few states that doesn't require you to have a trailer registered," said Mcgee. "Other states require you to have a license plate for your trailer."

Mcgee said for that reason, trailers are a hot item.

"When a trailer is stolen it is easier to get rid of. You can steal a trailer in South Carolina and carry it to Georgia or North Carolina to sell it," said Mcgee.

That's why Pierre is beefing up security and offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the return of the stolen trailer.

"We are trying to install active cameras on all job sites so we can catch somebody if they do come in," said Pierre.
