Web Site Launched To Bolster Juvenile Justice Center Campaign

Posted: Updated:

The facility has a name synonymous with outdated, and now the campaign to replace it has a name as well.

"Our campaign is Protect Our County," said Tulsa County Commissioner Karen Keith, announcing the launch of the web site to help educate the public on the need for a new juvenile justice Center.

"When we first opened it in '69 there were 50 people employed here, now there's 150," she said.

And as a video on their web site shows, they are virtually stacked on top of one another.

"Every corner, every nook and cranny is filled with somebody," she said.

And that's not even mentioning the vast volume of kids that use the system.

"You know some 5,000 youth will come through this facility every year, and over 40% of them are kids who are abused and neglected. So these are not all juvenile offenders that come into this facility. These are young people that we need to take care of, we need to get them in a safe situation," she said.

At 45 years old, the current facility, says Keith, has long outlived its usefulness.

"I would say its 20 years overdue.," she said.

Protect our county.org, a campaign to help improve conditions for kids at a vulnerable crossroad, along with the folks who help them navigate the path.

"I can promise you that anybody at home watching this would not work here,"
