NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston police officer and substitute teacher at Daniel Jenkins Creative Learning Center turned himself in to authorities after a student said the two were in a scuffle in a classroom.

According to police, 25-year-old Brandon Moses was charged with third-degree assault.

The police report states the school's assistant principal heard a commotion in the hallway and found a 14-year-old student picking up a wet floor sign with the intent to attack Moses.

The student said Moses had pushed him several times in the classroom after he threw a basketball instead of giving it over to Moses.

Moses said the student stepped toward him in a threatening manner, according to the report, and he pushed him out of the way. However, a surveillance video shows Moses pushing the student several times, the report states.

The student's guardian was called.

Moses was given a Personal Recognizance bond Wednesday. The judge noted Moses' clean record and the fact that no one in the community attended the hearing.

Moses was hired by Kelly Services, a staffing agency that provides substitute teachers for the school district. The company responded to the arrest Wednesday.

"Kelly Services is concerned about any reports of inappropriate behavior and take these matters very seriously.  Kelly substitute teachers undergo screening, background checks, receive thorough training and complete an orientation process to ensure only the most qualified substitute teachers are placed in front of students," the company said.

It also declined any further comment.

The Charleston County School District said Jenkins was removed from his position after the incident.

"He was immediately removed from his assignment at Daniel Jenkins Academy. Questions about his employment should be directed to Kelly Services. Questions about the investigation should be directed to the North Charleston Police Department," CCSD representatives said.

Moses has been placed on administrative leave without pay at the Charleston Police Department until the North Charleston Police investigation is completed, an official said.
