JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. -- A Huffman man was arrested early Friday morning after being caught trying to burglarize a home in Grayson Valley, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

Devon Martez Simmons, 27, is charged with third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, first-degree criminal mischief and attempting to elude. He is being held in the county jail on bonds totaling $27,500.

According to a release, deputies were called to a home in the 1700 block of Driftwood Lane around 2 a.m. and arrived to find a suspicious car in the driveway and loud, banging noises coming from inside the house. After noticing the basement door had been forced open, deputies entered the home to investigate while other lawmen surrounded the property outside.

Moments later, Simmons was seen running out of the front door before retreating back inside after seeing the responding deputies. He then, according to the sheriff's office, attempted to escape out of the back door, jumping off the deck but deputies were there to greet him and they quickly took him into custody.

Upon a further investigation at the scene, authorities discovered that the Simmons had allegedly been cutting and removing copper pipes from the residence, causing extensive damage to the home in the process. Deputies also recovered a shotgun and crow bar from the suspect's vehicle.
