2nd Guardsman stationed to Gallatin charged with assault faces court martial

Posted: Updated:

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WCIV) – A Coast Guardsman stationed on the Cutter Gallatin and charged with assault and battery, cruelty and maltreatment will face a special court-martial Wednesday in Norfolk, Va.

According to officials, 44-year-old Lt. Wayne Barfield is charged with violating four articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Barfield is the second member of the Gallatin to be court martialed in the last year for alleged inappropriate actions on board the ship.

Vice Adm. Robert Parker, Coast Guard Atlantic Area commander, decided to convene a court-martial based upon the recommendation of an Article 32 Investigation. An Article 32 Investigation is similar to a grand jury hearing in the civilian court system.

The investigation concluded that reasonable grounds exist to try Barfield for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, officials said.

According to Coast Guard release, Barfield has been administratively re-assigned to Marine Safety Unit Savannah and Facilities Engineering Base Elizabeth City, N.C., while awaiting trial.
